Pick a character, put on a spacesuit and embark on an interplanetary adventure. This could be the script for a science fiction film, but it isn’t. It’s NOVA, an interactive platform created by Novabase for the professional development of its employees. The project was kicked off with a pilot including 180 users.
NOVA – whose goal is to motivate employees to develop themselves professionally – was developed using methodologies such as design thinking and gamification. To achieve its goal, it uses quarterly “check-ups” where employees receive 360º feedback and carry out self-evaluations of their performance, together with individual missions given over the entire journey with predefined criteria to encourage certain types of behaviour.
Through this platform which gamifies their day-to-day tasks, Novabase’s employees are invited to walk in an astronaut’s shoes, while their behaviour and actions dictate their progress in different skills. With four levels equivalent to their professional experience, the skills are the same for everyone, but the demands are different, increasing according to experience.
Carmo Palma, Managing Director of Novabase’s Government, Transport and Energy business (one of the company’s areas that is already using the NOVA platform), explains that “Because our employees are our biggest asset, the way we manage talent is absolutely critical. Since 70% of Novabase’s employees now belong to the “Y Generation”, it is essential to find innovative solutions to stimulate them in their daily routine. NOVA lets every employee know about their performance and how it weighs up to the rest of the team. Having this information online and regularly updated encourages them to grow. We believe NOVA will revolutionize our approach to employee development and overhaul how they approach their professional growth.”
